Re: cyndi lauper's carey
Tue, January 30, 2007 - 7:18 PMYeah, I was wondering what others thought about that, we have that video. What a wonderful version, and Joni looked like she was loving it. Funny isn't it? All of us who love her and her work. As if I knew her, it was so...I guess the word is, heartwarming, to see her enjoying someone paying tribute.
I'll tell y'all a story. I was 18 years old, and I moved to St. Thomas, lived there for a year. One day I was late for work, my roomate said "just hitchhike, you'll get there in no time". Well, I never hitchhiked in my life. So there I am, standing under a tamarind tree, throwing sticks up in the air to get the fruit down. Along comes a car, must be 300 feet away, I don't know how I knew, I said "oh my god, James Taylor is going to pick me up hitchhiking". Well, it was him. He drove me to work. To make a long story short and continue with our subject matter, I said "you're my favorite artist, actually your my second favorite artist". He laughed and turned and said "Who's your favorite?" "Joni Mitchell". His head turned around in shock, "You're a little young to like Joni Mitchell, aren't you?" I said, "well you're kinda the same age, aren't you?" (Hey, I was young). He kinda laughed, got real quiet for a moment, and in earnest seriousness said "There's nobody in the business who works as hard as Joni Mitchell, nobody." Well, I write this because of two reasons, one, it was also very touching to here him sing "River" to her in that video, and you could see the obvious affection the two have for each other. Two, it's from the horses mouth, even the best of the best think she is the best. As he twisted his head around to tell me this, I could see the reverence.
XX to all you Joni lovers out there. -

Sun, March 4, 2007 - 10:38 AMLet's see, Sweet Honey in the Rock did the Circle Game, James Taylor did River, Cassandra Wilson did The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colven did Amelia, Chelsea Morning, Big Yellow Taxi, Richard Thompson did Black Crow and Woodstock.
It's worth getting a copy, I think. I put it on while I clean the house, just to listen to it! Anyone been reading the articles about the new ballet that just opened in Alberta, Canada? She helped choreograph the ballet, and it's set to her music, including 3 new ones. New CD coming out soon, all new material, she's pretty fired up politically right now. Pretty lovable, humorous photographs of her in the dance room with all the ballet dancers, her in her Jane Fonda tights, with a cigarette dangling from her hand. hee hee.
Saying "Avez-vous une allumette?". Maybe? -

Re: cyndi lauper's carey
Mon, March 5, 2007 - 3:40 PMYeah. Apparently, when her daughter, Kilauren, came back in her life, she said in an interview that she didn't need to make music anymore, the void was filled. They are at this time estranged. In a sense, there's a connection to productivity there, maybe. Nonetheless, it supposed to be about the mess were in politically, ecologically. There's a new song in the ballet playing in Alberta, set to her music, called "If I had a heart, I would cry".
From a woman who once said she reads Nietzsche for laughs! -

Re: cyndi lauper's carey
Tue, March 6, 2007 - 6:00 PMMostly articles on JMDL.com., not jonimitchell.com. JMDL.com is a discussion group website, not the her official one, but it pretty much gets any interview that's printed. Also, I'm a musician, so I peruse or keep up with most music mags. I feel she's quite a sage really, her interviews make me laugh. Gore Vidal is another one I follow.
